Color
This picture was taken in May, 2015 in Central Park, New York City. It inspires the viewer to anticipate spring. The hues of light pink and dark pink in the tulips sit gracefully upon the green stems. I took this picture using an iPhone 6 Plus.

Line
This picture was taken in July, 2014 in New Suffolk, New York. The gravel road leading to the gazebo delineates a path to be taken. Maybe a bride will walk down the path to her groom. There are also additional lines in the photo that create a rising effect. One's eye is drawn to the rows of grapevines in the distance, and creates a sense of walking up small hills through the vineyard. I took this picture using an iPhone 4.

Look closely at the burned and damaged ax. Notice the pocked handle and rusted blade. This is a first responders ax, and was carried by a New York Fireman going into a tower to rescue souls that were not to be rescued during the horrific events of 9/11. The events were quick, and possibly from a civilian's perspective working in the towers that day, unexpected. This picture was taken in July, 2013 by me while I was attending a fellowship at New York University, sponsored by the Gilder-Lehrman Foundation, on 9/11 in the American Memory. We, the students, had personal contact with the artifacts.I took this picture using an iPhone 4.

Movement
It is clear that I am reaching for something. What is that something? is it a phone, a drink, or am I reaching to shake someone's hand? Whatever, the perception the arm and hand create a movement of reaching out, and the position of the body leaning in allows the viewer to know that something is about to be in my hand. This picture was taken July, 2013 on a rooftop garden in New York City. I took this picture using an iPhone 4.

Focal Point/Emphasis
Without a word one knows these are grapes on a grapevine. This image could easily be used on a flyer for a vineyard advertising their lush fruits and encouraging the viewer to visit their vineyard for a wine tasting experience. The image could be placed on the right of text with a heading, Taste...Marsh Vineyard. This picture was taken in July, 2014 in New Suffolk, New York. I took this picture using an iPhone 4.

Balance
This is one single image reflecting balance. The dark chocolate cupcakes create an invisible line on the left to right downward diagonal, and the lime cupcakes create an invisible line on the right to left downward diagonal. The white box creates a sense of separation and empty space. This picture was taken on my birthday in March, 2011. I took this picture using an iPhone 4.

Unity
This is a picture of my living room. The furniture is mostly cherry in a conservative style. The pictures and candles on the sofa table are distributed three and three, with three items in the center of the table. The picture frames, while each in a differently design and size, are all brass in color. The candles and lighting in the room are a soft, subtle glow of warm white. Also notice the placement of the lighting in the center of the room. The candles on the table and next to the fireplace, as well as the lights on the small tree create a triangle that directs your eye toward the fireplace. The colors in the room are consistently cherry, brick, and off whites. Items in the room look like they belong together and create cohesive design. I took this picture using an iPhone 6 Plus.

Size/Scale and Balance
The principle of balance is displayed here by the position of the young Indian women and their hands. There is one young woman in the middle, and two on either side of her. Each are holding out their palms which have been tattooed with Henna in celebration of a marriage. The element of size/scale is represented by the proportion of the hand size, as well as the close up of the hands by the camera. The close up takes the viewers' eyes directly to the tattoos. This was a fabulous wedding I attended with my husband in Chennai, India, August, 2008. I took this picture using a Sony HDR handycam videocamera.

Space and Focal Point/Emphasis
The element of space is used because the negative space or white background of the wall, allows the statue to stand out. The principle of focal point/emphasis is obtained by there only being one image, that of the statue. The vidid colors and ornate style of the statue capture the visitor's eyes attention. This picture was taken in Mahabalipuram, also known as Mamallapuram. It is a town in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is south from the city of Chennai. I took this picture using a Sony HDR handycam videocamera.

Color and Rhythm/Pattern
This is one of my favorite pictures. This is a painting in a temple I visited in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. The varying tones of oranges and reds, while separate, appear to also blend and excite in comparison to the hues of blue that create a soft and fluent backdrop to the powerful reds. The rhythm of the gods move together. The pattern of upward movement of the images establishes a feeling of floating. I took this picture using a Sony HDR handycam videocamera.

Shape/Form and Movement
Shape and form are demonstrated in the consistent square or rectangle signs and buildings. Movement is demonstrated in the picture because you see people walking, or rather you imagine people are walking while they carry the big umbrellas to protect them from the hot Indian sun. Also, the man in the bottom of the photo is leaning forward and he is either riding a bike or picking up fruit. The sights, sounds and smells of India are exotic. This picture was taken in downtown Chennai. The cultural and economic divisions in the caste system of Indian society is still relevant. Simply by viewing the ornate clothing of the young women in the wedding photo above is in stark contrast to the dirty shirt on the man in this picture. I am often ask if I would return to India. My answer is always, yes. I took this picture using a Sony HDR handycam videocamera.

Similarity
I become so serene and relaxed when I look at the picture of my deck. All the elements in the picture belong together. The view shows chaise lounges, chairs grouped around a fire pit, plants and the corner of a hot tub. It looks like a relaxing summer evening opportunity. I took this picture two summers ago using a Sony HDR handycam videocamera.

Continuity
The slope of the hill and the right leaning posture of the boulder draws the viewer's eyes up and to the right, to the larger top end of the boulder. Additionally, the way the boulder is sitting on the side of the hill also adds to the appearance of leaning to the right. This picture was taken in Mahabalipuram, a town in the Indian State of Tamil Nadu. It is south from the city of Chennai, and the entire sounds consist of temples carved in stone in the side of a mountain. It dates back to the 7th Century. I took this picture using a Sony HDR handycam videocamera.

Proximity
These are dog jackets I purchased for my Australian Terrier. You can see the jackets are placed close together to create a grouping effect. I purchased these jackets three years ago. Unfortunately she has outgrown them. It still makes me smile whenever I look at them. I laugh when I try to put one on her again. She looks like a sausage in the middle with lots of fur sticking out on either end. I took this picture with an iPhone 4.

Closure
While you don't see the whole building, you only see the roof or steeples, you know this is a church. Where it is, and what the rest of the building looks like, the viewer doesn't know, however, for certain, this is a church. This picture was taken at San Thome Church in Chennai, India in August, 2008. I took this picture using a Sony HDR handycam videocamera.

Reflection
Clearly I am not a professional photographer, however, I love to take pictures. Pictures evoke memories of times, places and friends that I have shared special moments with. The picture on the left is of me at Belvedere Caster, Central Park, New York, NY, May, 2015, with an iPhone 6 Plus. I was one of several teachers chaperoning our 8th Grade students on their eighth grade field trip. We had so much fun, chaperones and students. This assignment was challenging and rewarding. It was interesting to see how I had to focus on the elements, however, the principles and Gestalt theory came to me much easier. Chapter 5 in White space is not your enemy, provided valuable information and guidance as I wrote the descriptions next to each photo. I also found it interesting to see how iPhones have taken over as my camera. I no longer carry an extra camera such as the Sony Handycam. The value of going through my archives of pictures is that I see the value of not just sharing an image to a group of students, but share a photo you took. Make it personal. I think sharing personal history in connection with teaching a specific subject, such as the photo I took of the fireman's ax in conjunction with the study of the events of 9/11, helps create a connected and relatable learning environment.
